Uncanny Automator WordPress Plugin Review: Automate Your Workflows Like A Pro

How much time do you spend on website admin tasks? I bet a lot. Or, more hours than you’d like to admit. You’re in luck though, because, with the Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin, we show you exactly how to automate tasks, save time and boost efficiency.

The plugin allows you to automate processes between your plugins. For instance, you can set up the plugin to add users to a certain BuddyPress group (or a LearnPress course) after they purchase a product via WooCommerce. You can even set the plugin to trigger WordPress to send an email to the user, whenever they complete a particular step.

The opportunities are limitless, and the features aplenty. Setting up the Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin is the stuff of fourth graders. Further, creating automated processes (or recipes as they are called in the plugin) is as easy as A, B, C. You don’t need coding knowledge whatsoever, so you’re welcome 🙂

Without further ado, let us dig in. Please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comment section at the end.

What is Uncanny Automator WordPress Plugin

Are you, by any chance, familiar with the Zapier task automation service? Well, the Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin is just like Zapier, but for your WordPress plugins. It allows you to link processes between your plugins, allowing you to automate tasks and save a great deal of time.

Or as the Uncanny Automator website puts it…

The Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin makes it possible to automatically manage all of the workflows and user experiences that happen on your WordPress site. – What is Uncanny Automator?

For illustration purposes, let us assume you’d like to sell courses via WooCommerce (as products) while enrolling the students via LearnPress, LearnDash or any other WordPress learning management system (LMS). You can create recipes in Uncanny Automator that trigger when users purchase a course. Uncanny Automator will then add users to the respective course(s) in your LMS.

For example, if you use the Modern Tribe Events Calendar to manage your events you can use the Uncannny Automator to thank new event attendees. Just create a recipe to grab a users’ name and Twitter handle when they register for an event (the trigger), then add the action of tweeting the user a message such as “thank you for registering!” And this is just an example, the plugin comes with a ton of triggers and actions. Triggers make the recipe run, the action is that which you wish to achieve you can see more triggers and actions on their site).

That is, the plugin instructs WordPress to do action B (e.g. add a user to a group, send email, enroll user to a course, etc) when the user triggers A (e.g. purchasing, subscribing, etc). Something like the plugin helps you to do this when the user does that. Automatically. Uncanny Automator is a task automation plugin on steroids.

It makes running your site a breeze since most of the time-consuming tasks are eliminated without compromising functionality and user experience. Does all of this make sense to you? Okay, 10 seconds break in the form of…

A word from the developer:

[The Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin connects] “…a dozen plugins together, watching for “triggers” from one or more plugins, and as conditions are met it automatically triggers “actions”, or new activities on the site.

He adds…

These automated recipes can save WordPress site owners hundreds of hours of time every year by automating sales, marketing, administrative, learning, and other processes. It connects plugins that would otherwise be impossible to connect.” –What is Uncanny Automator?

10 seconds break over. So class, again, what is Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin? A powerful task automation plugin for your WordPress plugins.

Need I say more?

Installing Uncanny Automator WordPress Plugin

After purchasing and downloading Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin, login to your WordPress admin menu and navigate to Plugins > Add New to upload, install and activate the plugin zip. You’ll also need to register your license key under Uncanny Automator > License Activation (which can be found in your Uncanny Automator account).

Moving on, clicking the Uncanny Automator menu item in WordPress leads you to the Recipes screen, but as you’d expect, it is empty because we’re yet to create our first automated task.

On the Recipes screen, hit the Add New button as we detail below.

Creating Recipes In Uncanny Automator WordPress Plugin

Prior to installing the Uncanny Automator WordPress plugin, I installed  BuddyPress, bbPress, LearnPress, WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and Contact Form 7. Installing these plugins as you test out Uncanny Automator helps you enjoy this tutorial more.

Also, these are the plugins you see under the Triggers section in the image below.

Oh, by the way, the number of integrations you see in the screen above depends on the plugins on your site.

Additionally, I created a WooCommerce product (Test WordPress Course)…

…and a sample course (thanks to LearnPress) for illustration purposes. This course is also named Test WordPress Course. Also, here is a picture for your viewing pleasure 🙂

Courses aside. Go back to the Edit Recipe screen.

For our example, I will sell a WooCommerce product (the Test WordPress course) and add any user who purchases the product to the sample LearnPress course. Remember, this is just an example; you can create a billion recipe combinations.

The idea here is to simulate how recipes work. We shall set one trigger (the WooCommerce purchase) to activate an action (adding the user to the LearnPress sample course). You can, thanks to the pro version of Uncanny Automator, add multiple triggers and actions.

Let’s get down to business.

Add A Title

It goes without saying that the first thing you add to your recipe is a title. So what are you gonna name your recipe? The developer recommends including the trigger and action in your recipe title. For example. WooCommerce-to-LearnPress-Course.

The recipe name should make sense only to you, so have a field day.

In your Edit Recipe screen, add the title in the Title field shown below.

Uncanny Automator kicks in, auto-saves the title, and you feel good 🙂

Set A Trigger and Action

For this part, I would love to refer you to this nice video by the developers. The video actually details how to create a recipe.

Pretty neat, huh? Let’s get some hands-on experience if you didn’t bother to watch the video.

Setting A Trigger

After adding the recipe name, let us continue with our WooCommerce to LearnPress example. Under the Select and integration section, click WooCommerce as shown in the image below.

On the drop-down that appears, choose the User purchases a product trigger as shown in the following image.

This instructs the plugin to capture all purchases, and direct the workflow to a certain action, as we shall discover in the upcoming section.

But before that, we need to choose a specific product (Test WordPress Course in our case). To do that, click on the “a product” field as shown in the image below.

A drop-down appears allowing you to choose a specific product that triggers this particular recipe. For our example, I chose Test WordPress Course as we highlight in the screenshot below.

After that, hit the Save Trigger button as shown by the bottom arrow in the image above.

From the same image, notice the Add Another Trigger button that helps you to add multiple triggers to a single recipe. That can only mean great things for your automation needs.

With a trigger in place, it’s time to create an action.

Adding An Action

Just below where you set the trigger, there is a second section; Actions. Here, you define the actions you’d like to take place whenever a user triggers the recipe.

For this tutorial, we aim at enrolling the user to a LearnPress course titled Test WordPress Course every time a user purchases the course via WooCommerce.

On the Edit Recipe screen, click the Add Action button as shown in the image below.

Next, choose your integration. Since our course runs on LearnPress, I went with LearnPress as shown below. Notice the other available integrations, of course, with the number depending on the plugins on your site.

Are you learning something here today? I hope so, let’s keep going. Choose Enroll user in a course from the drop-down menu that appears. See the illustration below.

That’s not all. Next, click the “a course” field to choose a specific course screen as shown below.

For our case, I selected Test WordPress Course as we highlight below.

Click the Save action button, but don’t pop the bubbly yet; your recipe is still in draft mode. Note, also, from the image above, that you can add multiple actions to a recipe.

To activate your recipe, toggle the Draft buttons shown in the image below to Live. Never forget to toggle on your triggers, actions and the recipe itself using the shown buttons.

At the end of it all, a basic live recipe should look something like this.

a recipe in uncanny automator wordpress plugin

Again, don’t forget to toggle Live your triggers, actions and the recipe itself. Three very important switches as shown in the image above. Now, your recipe is active and in use on your website. Anybody who buys the Test WordPress Course via WooCommerce will be enrolled to the Test WordPress Course on LearnPress.

How sweet and relatively easy to configure. You can add any other recipe in a similar manner.

Remember, Uncanny Automator integrates with Zapier and Zapier integrates with more than 1,000 apps. Additionally you can include up to 5 variables (or “tokens”) in your recipe actions, such as emails or zaps. Captured variables can then be used to create user specific media (such as a personalized email) or passed on to Zapier for further use in a Salesforce Zap you’ve established. The opportunities are endless! Thanks to this fact and Uncanny Automator built-in features, you can automate your entire online business, not just your WordPress site.

To boot, Uncanny Automator comes with a report center where you can see how your recipes, triggers, and actions are performing. This helps you to identify the recipes, triggers, and actions that are working and those that could use a little streamlining.

Final Words

Are you in the market for a task automation plugin for WordPress? If so, look no further than the Uncanny Automator. The plugin is extremely easy to set up and use. What are you waiting for? Uncanny Automator helps you to connect your plugins in ways not seen before.

The plugin is compatible with many popular WordPress plugins already, meaning you’ll be up and running in minutes. Have you automated your WordPress tasks before? Have any tips to share? Perhaps you have a burning question. Please share with us in the comments below.
