WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan” Release

Happy holidays! It might just be a coincidence, but WordPress has graced us with the gift of a brand new update full of fun and useful features you’re sure to enjoy. Named Vaughan after American jazz singer (and four time Grammy award winner) Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, WordPress 4.7 is a smooth and classy update that ready for you to unwrap.

New 2017 Theme

Twenty Seventeen Theme

Per usual, there is an all new theme to go with the all new version of WordPress. The Twenty Seventeen theme is an elegant addition to the collection of default WordPress themes.

The theme includes unique new options for full screen images, header videos, widgets, social menus and much more. It’s clever asymmetrical layout makes it easy to create content sections, menus or anything else for more professional websites and the beautiful blog is perfect for sharing all of your thoughts. All in all it’s a pretty great free theme!

Easy Theme Setup

Easy Theme Setup

Not sure how to get started with your theme? No problem! WordPress 4.7 introduces the option for theme developers to define sample content within the theme. This means that upon installation your theme can add sample menus, pages, posts and other content to help you get started faster.

It’s important to note that this is an all new feature so the number of themes offering it will be limited at the moment. However, we’re confident this is something you’ll see many free theme developers picking up and possibly premium themes too.

Faster Menu Building

Faster Menu Building

Last update WordPress moved the menu builder into the customizer, and now you can add pages from the menu screen. No need to make pages then builder your menu, now you can add new page drafts while creating your menu so you can get everything right and add your content later.

Other Notable Features

There are many other WordPress 4.7 features that we didn’t think needed a description, but here’s a quick list so you can see at a glance what other awesomeness awaits you after updating:

  • Edit shortcuts in the live Customizer
  • Instant custom CSS previews
  • PDF file thumbnail previews (goodbye file icon!)
  • Dashboard language options for your users
  • Post type templates
  • REST API content endpoint inclusion
  • New hooks & functions for developers
  • And tons more (checkout the official WordPress 4.7 release article)

Or your can watch the official release video to see what’s new.

That’s All for Now

That’s most of what’s new in WordPRess 4.7! Thanks so much to the over 475+ contributors that made this release possible – we can’t wait for the next one 🙂

I’m excited about the new default theme. I believe sample content and menus are a great feature and I hope to see it in the future in all free and premium WordPress themes. People will easily see whether a certain theme can fulfill the role they expect of it.

Thanks for being so agile, Kyla and for keeping us up to date.
