“Bulletin” WPExplorer Inspired WordPress Theme

When we changed the design at WPExplorer.com a lot of people seemed to really like the new colors and styling and even got some requests to create custom themes with the same design style. So here it is, the first WPExplorer inspired theme – Bulletin.

I’ve been really wanting to make some simple blogging themes and I think Bulletin is a good start. There really isn’t anything complex about the theme. It uses all built-in WordPress functions such as a custom post type for the homepage slider and post formats for adding various types of posts (standard, video, image, gallery, link) so you can  easily share various types of media.

Custom WP gallery

One of the things I really wanted to do was include support for the new WordPress 3.5 gallery creator. So what I did was actually de-register and re-register the shortcode so I could great a nice looking gallery style with fancybox support.

Responsive

Bulletin is of course a responsive theme. I’m not sure you can get away with making themes that aren’t at least mobile “friendly” these days, everyone seems to be buying/using responsive themes. What I’ve done on this theme, which I think is fairly unique is actually hidden the whole sidebar region at the top of the page with a toggle to open and close the region, this way your content is what will stand out the most.

AJAX Load more

I’ve integrated an AJAX “load more” function for the post entries on this theme (optional, you could choose regular 1,2,3,4…pagination if you wish). This way, people can visit your homepage and check out all your posts without ever leaving until they find exactly what they want to look at. Great photo galleries – with the load more function if you have any categories that use only the image post format which opens the images in lightbox its awesome!

AJ, I’m using the Complete theme for this RV park website. (It’ll be live in a day or two, currently on localhost.) The template is awesome! especially the portfolio and the services features. I’ve noticed a few features don’t work, and wonder if there’s a paid version that’s fully functional. For instance, I can act like I’m changing the header background til I’m blue in the face, but it won’t change.

Seriously, it’s amazing and just what my client’s looking for. I’d just like to do some simple color modifications. Any suggestions?

We realize there are some bugs with the older free themes but we haven’t had time to go through them. We haven’t removed any of them because a lot of people will still use them and fix the bugs themselves… Simple color modifications? Why not just use CSS :-)
